In continuing my life’s mission of avoiding people while still finding ways to stick it to “The Man,” I’ve decided to start my own independent publishing brand: One Nine Books. This isn’t a money-making venture for me; One Nine authors retain all rights to their work and keep 100% of all royalties. One Nine Books is just a way for a group of writers to come together and support each other.
One Nine Books will publish across all fiction genres, although there will be a heavy emphasis on mysteries to start. The brand will also branch off into non-fiction and poetry. Basically, One Nine Books will celebrate writing for writing’s sake. I just wanted a reason to write again…and to give a damn.
One Nine’s initial offering includes six books:
POP LINE by Pat Picciarelli: When New York City detective Ray Yale crosses the “Pop Line” into Western Pennsylvania, he learns small towns can hide deadly secrets. Yale’s journey starts as a mission of mercy, and he travels to Hastings, PA, to inform Carla Greer her brother Charlie, one of Yale’s few friends, has died. Upon arriving, Yale learns Carla is the prime suspect in her police officer husband’s murder. Yale feels he owes it to Charlie to prove Carla’s innocence. Along the way, he gets involved with a child abduction case, uncovers police corruption, confronts a disgraced mob boss, and is forced to deal with his own emotions regarding his deceased wife and his undeniable feelings for his new client. But is the grieving widow as innocent as she seems?
CAGE LIFE by Miles Watson: It's the punch you don't see coming that drops you. Any fighter can tell you that. And Mickey Watts isn't just any fighter; he's one of the best in mixed martial arts, a top contender who seems to have it all: looks, brains and a rich girlfriend who's crazy about him. The fact his family is mobbed-up to its Irish-Italian eyebrows has never been a problem...until Mick throws one punch too many and finds that some debts can only be paid in blood.
KNUCKLE DOWN by Miles Watson: When mixed martial artist Mickey Watts returns to New York after three years in exile, he just wants to forget his bloody days with the mob and do what he does best -- fight. But when his ex-fiancee is threatened by the same vicious gangsters that ran him out of town, he gets a chance not only to win her back but to settle some old scores in the process. Trouble is, Mick's not the only one with vengeance on his mind. Because the city that never sleeps, never forgives.
HONEST JOHN CHURCHFIELD: With an intellect as sharp as his right cross, Honest John Churchfield is the second-best detective in 1890s London. Unfortunately, Sherlock Holmes casts an enormous shadow. This is a collection of my first seven Honest John stories, chronicling Churchfield's adventures as he unravels a baffling art heist, exposes a fraudulent fortuneteller, matches wits with a rogue hypnotist, and solves a pair of perplexing murders. Two additional stories, "Honest John Gets His Man" and "Honest John Keeps a Date," provide unique insight into the great detective and his gin-soaked existence. These stories set the stage for the upcoming Churchfield novels.
PRIVATE POETRY and SALVATION PARTY by Todd Teacher: Pittsburgh’s unofficial poet laureate, Todd is famous for his open mic performances throughout the Steel City and surrounding areas. One Nine is proud to present his first two poetry collections.
While Pat Picciarelli, Miles Watson, and I will be the backbone of One Nine’s fiction line, expect to see some other familiar names in the months to come.
